We Keep the FUN in FUNdamentals

By now you are probably pretty familiar with the fact that safety is critically important to us at Nazareth Pallet. The physical and mental health and wellness of our employees is a big focus for us daily because it is key to the continued success of our company.

But here is the reality – talking about safety every day can get a little stale and eventually employees start tuning out.

So our safety manager, Wendy Keim, decided to take on the challenge to make safety (and other company communication) FUN. Hey, a laugh a day keeps the doctor away!

Here’s a look at how we handle safety (and other important topics).

Light-Hearted Approach

Safety manager Wendy Keim started working for us earlier this year. Her credentials are impressive, including 25 years of experience and OSHA and MSHA trainer certifications, among others. OSHA stands for Occupational Safety and Health Administration and MSHA stands for Mine Safety and Health Administration.

What’s just as impressive, though, is her ability to convey weighty topics in fun-sized morsels – Wendy uses fun slides on our large-screen TV in the employee lounge to convey serious topics in humorous ways.

While employees are enjoying their well-deserved break in our newly renovated break room (more on that below), they can take a peek at the large TV screen that cycles through fun slides on a variety of topics from safety and employee achievements to fun company updates, and more.

Wendy’s goal was to keep things light and fun so that everyone would be drawn to the message in each slide – especially those covering serious safety topics

Here are a few examples:

This slide shows a few Nazareth Pallet employees eating outside with cartoon animals such as Garfield. The point? To encourage employees to enjoy the picnic area, which is in the shade.

This slide discusses heat stress. Lot’s of good information with some visual aids!

Other slides offer a sneak peek at what’s happening at Nazareth Pallet. Can you guess what Tom is building?

The slides do not all focus on safety. Wendy incorporates a mix of trivia and employee recognition slides as well. For instance, did you know that no original recordings of the moon landing exist because NASA taped over them?

And Wendy doesn’t stop at still photos. She also uses YouTube videos to change things up a bit from time to time.

Visible Safety Presence

Another way that we emphasize safety is through programs such as trainings and mentorships. Safety information is conveyed in three languages, and employees are trained to think with a safety-oriented mindset.

The wearing of proper safety gear is enforced every day.

Employees Who Want to Be at Work

One essential component in safety is having employees who want to be at work. This means they are more attentive and engaged. We invest a lot of time, energy and resources to provide a positive and rewarding work environment for our employees.

Our latest initiative is a newly renovated and expanded employee break room.

It has plenty of space for employees to stow their belongings and to enjoy food and good company. We also provide microwaves and vending machines among other amenities.
