Recycled Pallets Vs Remanufactured Pallets

Virtually every type of entity within the commercial industry, from factory and warehouse, to manufacturing and distribution, uses pallets for storage and transportation of goods. Whether it is raw material or finished products, pallets are the standard of the industry.

And they are just as viable now as they ever were.

Of course, every pallet has a price, and when you need pallets for shipping, you’ll need to allot for them on your overall budget. New pallets are pricey, and unless they are an absolute necessity, you would be better off to choose between recycled pallets or remanufactured pallets.

But which type is better for your needs? Not to worry – we’re here to help you figure that out.

Recycled Pallets

A recycled pallet is pretty much how it sounds. It is used over and over again until it reaches the end of its service life. But while it is in use, it is repaired to maintain its integrity, remains structurally sound and works as good as new.

Recycled pallets are graded to assure the customer gets exactly the type of pallet needed. For example, Grade 1A pallets may have these characteristics:

  • Limited or no tar
  • Grease or paint covering the top or coating the stringers
  • Little or no deviation from being square
  • Nail heads will not protrude
  • Deck boards will have a minimum thickness of 9/16th of an inch

In other words, they will be as close to new as possible.

A Grade 1 pallet might be slightly discolored on the top boards, may have repairs done on the stringers with mending plates and it may have variable deck board widths.

A Grade 2 pallet will allow repair of the boards and stringers with mending plates and plugs. The top may have mixed color bright and gray boards, and splits will be allowed (but they must not be more than ½ the height or width, nor ½ the length of the stringer).

Here’s the takeaway. Each grade of pallet remains structurally sound, yet by allowing in some cosmetic blemishes and minor repairs, the cost can be kept substantially lower by up to 70% less than brand new.

And because the pallets are recycled and not rebuilt, delivery time on your order will be quicker too.

Remanufactured Pallets

Remanufactured pallets are essentially custom made pallets using wood from other pallets. They can be rebuilt to custom specifications, standard sizes or virtually any size that is required, and because they use recycled pallet wood from other pallets, you’ll save between 20 and 40 percent over buying new.

They can even be reconditioned to look like new – essentially giving you a brand new pallet at a much lower price point.

The Difference

If your business needs call for a custom sized pallet or the aesthetics of the pallet need to be as close to “brand new” as possible, remanufactured is the way to go. They are less expensive than brand new, but in most cases they will look new or nearly new.

More importantly, you can order custom sizes to meet your specific business needs.

If you need a pallet to be a workhorse for your facility, than a recycled pallet is the ticket. These structurally sound pallets won’t let your loads down and you can choose the grade that’s right for your business or facility.

And that’s not all.

Recycled pallets will save you between 30% and 50% over remanufactured pallets, and up to 70% over going brand new. In most cases and for most commercial applications, you’ll never go wrong using a recycled pallet.
